POKER JARGON

0-9

3Bet - Re-raising an opening raise pre-flop or making the second raise post-flop.

A

Air - When a player has ‘air’, they have no more than a high card.

All-in - When a player puts all of their chips into the pot.

B

Back Raise - Re-raising a raise after you have initially limped.

Barrelling - Following up a flop continuation bet with a turn and river bet.

BB - Big Blind

Bet - The amount of money that is first put into the pot by any player in each round.

Brick - Can be used to describe the turn or river card if it doesn’t affect anyone’s hand.

BTN - Button

Burn Card - A card that is dealt face down in the middle of the table before the Flop, Turn & River are dealt.

C

Call - When a player matches the current bet.

Check - The action of a player who doesn’t want to open the betting.

Check Raise - Raising another player’s bet after initially checking.

CO - Cut Off

Continuation Bet - When a player bets out on the flop after raising pre-flop.

D

Dry Flop - When the three flop cards are not connected in any way, creating few draws.

Dry Pot - A dry pot is a side pot with no money or chips in.

Flop - The first three community cards.

Fold - The action of a player who doesn’t want to continue in the hand by passing their cards to the dealer.

Gutshot - A straight draw where the missing card is somewhere in the middle.

Hole Cards - The two face down cards that every player is dealt

Isolation Raise - Either raising a player’s limp or a player’s all-in to get the pot heads-up.

K

Kicker - When you are only using one hole card to make your hand, your remaining hole card is your ‘kicker’.

Limp - To call the big blind

M

Maniac - A player who raises with a lot of hands and has a tendency not to fold.

Monotone Flop - When all three flop cards are from the same suit.

MTT - Multi Table Tournament

MP - Middle Position

N

Nuts - When you have the best possible hand with the cards available to you.

O

Open Ender - A straight draw where you have four running cards and you can hit the card either side to make a straight.

P

Post-flop - The action after the flop is dealt.

Pre-flop - The action before the flop is dealt.

Q

R

Rainbow Flop - When all three flop cards are from a different suit.

Raise - When a player raises the current bet.

Re-Raise - Raising an earlier raise or making the second raise in the same betting round

River/5th Street - The 5th and final community card.

Rock - A player who plays very tight at the table.

S

SB - Small Blind.

SnG - Sit n Go.

Squeeze Play - Re-raising an opening raise that has one or more callers.

T

Turn/4th Street - The 4th community card.

UTG - Under The Gun.

Wet Flop - When the three flop cards are heavily connected, creating a lot of possible draws.
